la llosa

La Llosa (Benidorm)

  • Entry: from the boat
  • Depth: 6 - 30 metres  19 - 98 feet
  • What to expect: A generous variety of invertebrates, schooling fish and pelagics from the blue abyss gather over this reef. This location (far from the coast and in deep water) allows you to encounter the stingray, stone fish and a whole other range of sea occupants. Strong currents with fresh seawater must be one of the reasons why octopuses, scorpion fish and moray eels appear to be much larger than at the locations near to the coast. The boat connects the anchor near to the reef, the always present and sometimes strong current require divers to descent along a line against the flow until they arrive at the bottom. Only a few meters out the seafloor plunges down to greater depths in an almost vertical submarine cliff known to divers as the drop-off. This drop-off starts its rapid descent into the depths at only  8 metres (26 feet )

Once over the edge the current fades away but now one must penetrate a thermocline. The water temperature falls considerable, a full wetsuit with cap is recommended, even in the summer. Alongside the impressive wall one descents enjoying the gorgonians, sea anemones and coral all the way down. This is an ideal place for corals to grow. A constant flow brings along plankton upon which they feed. The water at this point is clear and free from sediment, flowing in from the deeper water.

The wall reaches the floor at 35 metres / 114 feet and marks the recreational part of this location. Many consider this spot as the most beautiful location between Calpe and Benidorm
