La
isla de Benidorm / the peacock island
- Entry: from the boat
- Depth: 7 - 30 metres 23 - 98 feet
-
What to expect: If you stay at
Benidorm, you will dive here for certain, but dive centres with fast boats from
Altea, Calpe, Moraira and other places come here in the summer season as
well, at least weekly. The north side of the island where we will find grottos and slopes that drop down to 25 metres
/ 82 feet acts as a natural barrier against the current. This location is referred to as
'El Cristo' named after a small statue of the patron saint sunk by divers a couple of years
ago. Sadly enough, it has been stolen.
The south and southwestern part of the island includes the dive sites 'El Faro' and
'Punta de Garbí'. In depths between 15 and 30 metres
/ 49 and 98 feet, you will find a succession of large boulders, sheer
walls, ledges and shallow caves, a variety of seaweed, sponges, octopuses and conger
eels. Another interesting possibility is to circle the island without reaching great depths so that the air reserve is
sufficient.
Think ahead and plan your course around the island and use the current to your
advantage.
